If You Can’t Stand the Heat ... On Burnt Pad Denial in Dogs | petMD

Yet another article about the dangers of heat - our dogs and cats can burn the pads of their feet on hot pavement. If you haven't walked on hot pavement in your bare feet recently, you might try it. Then think about how your pet must feel if made to walk on the same surface. Please pay special attention to the needs of your pets during this particularly hot time of the season. They need your protection from hot cars, pools, hot sidewalks and need plenty of food and shade.

How divorce mediation works for pet custody | Hawaii Divorce Mediation

The Center for Animal Advocacy will represent individuals involved in custody disputes related to their pets (children in fur coats). Here is one legal practitioners take on the necessity of mediation in resolving pet custody issues. Mediation is the only arena where parties to a dispute have the ability to craft their own unique solutions. Arbitration and litigation put the decision making authority in the hands of someone else. Why take any chances?

Don't Let the Dog Days Get Your Dog - Hinsdale-Clarendon Hills, IL Patch

Did A Bulldog Bark Himself To Death?: Gothamist

This article hits two interesting subjects - veterinary malpractice and dogs that bark too much. On the veterinary malpractice side, it is unfortunate the clinic where the dog was staying did not take measures to insure the safety of the dog. If the dog was in distress, as evidenced by several days of non-stop barking, then the clinic may have had a duty to do more than allow him to die.

On the barking note, it is true that far too many dogs have been euthanized, or maybe even worse, de-barked, because of a chronic barking problem.

Dog ordinances: A grim situation | savannahnow.com

Far too often we see pit bulls, as a breed, taking the brunt of irresponsible pet ownership. There are no bad dogs, just bad owners. I think most dog trainers would agree. Caesar Milan says he's only met a couple of dogs that couldn't be rehabilitated. Too bad we can't say that about the people who use their dogs as a status symbol and encourage aggressive or fighting behavior.

As pet lovers we all have a responsibility to educate ourselves and our fellow dog owners about responsible training and pet ownership.

Another Round of Handwringing Over DIY Firearm Euthanasia | petMD

Dr. Khuly takes on a really tough subject in this article about do-it-yourself euthanasia of pets - particularly dogs and horses. Euthanasia is not a pretty subject regardless of how it's carried out. Losing a loved pet just isn't something we want to think about. I've had the unfortunate experience to lose a number of pets. They were all humanely euthanized under the supervision of my veterinarian. My heart was breaking and I was sobbing. I can't even begin to imagine anyone using a firearm to "put their pet to sleep."

As you know, I have horses. Fortunately I've never had to put a horse down or even watch the procedure for a friend's horse. I've read stories of people putting their horses down and cry the whole time. I dread the day when it's my turn. Again, it will only be accomplished under the supervision of my veterinarian. Certainly not at the hands of my husband or one of his friends with a gun.

Our pets give us unconditional love for their entire lives. The least we can do is offer them a peaceful alternative when their time comes. Thanks Dr. Khuly for bringing this information to light.
