Protecting Polar Bears

This week the United States is poised to take a huge step toward protecting polar bears from one of their greatest threats: the trade in fur and body parts. While the loss of sea-ice habitat to global warming remains the greatest challenge to the survival of the species, hundreds of polar bears are killed to make rugs every year.

Thursday is the deadline for countries to submit resolutions under an international treaty that would ban the trade in polar bears' bodies. Last week the Russian Federation promised to support such a ban, but only if the United States introduces the resolution.

The Obama administration needs to hear from you today. Please take action today to contact the White House and demand that our country introduce a resolution, under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, to protect polar bears from the rug trade. Take action by using this Web address: http://action.biologicaldiversity.org/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=11704.
